The Senate rejected the proposal made by its ad hoc committee on the review of the constitution to make it possible for the President and state governors to have six-year single term tenure in office. The proposal was rejected yesterday. If the proposal had been approved, this would automatically have barred President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan and the thirty six state governors from contesting in the 2015 general elections. As it turned out, however, 84 Senators voted against the proposal, with only 14 in support and 1 abstaining from voting altogether.Amongst other things voted against were financial autonomy for the local governments, the attempts to grant The Federal Capital Territory a mayoral status, the scrapping of the office of Minister for the FCT and attempts to separate the office of the Attorney General from that of the Minister of Justice. It was understood that each clause required 2/3 of the 109 senators to be approved.
